Following the announcement that Kwik Fit’s apprenticeship programme had been awarded an Outstanding rating from Ofsted earlier this year, the scheme has once again been awarded – this time at the 2015 NTDA Tyre Industry Awards. The apprenticeship programme was announced as the winner of the Staff Training and Development Initiative of the Year category at a spectacular sold out event held at the ICC Birmingham this month, and we couldn’t be prouder.
Our apprentice programme is supported with a fantastic infrastructure that really supports our apprentices through their entire 2 year journey. The programme provides an opportunity for young people to develop the skills, attitude and knowledge required to succeed and reach their full potential. An opportunity they might not otherwise have had. There is no defined entry level as we always look at an applicant’s attitude ahead of academic success.
Needless to say, we were overjoyed then to also find out this month that the apprenticeship scheme had been nominated for the Apprenticeship Programme of the Year Award at the 2016 Learning Awards. The ceremony, hosted by the Learning and Performance Institute, will take place in February so we hope to report further success early next year.
But what makes our programme different? Kwik Fit delivers all elements of its apprenticeship programme though its own internal learning and development team supported by local centre staff. This means the programme is well integrated into our day-to-day business activity and allows for highly effective delivery. We also have four professional training academies all equipped with exceptional training resources and very knowledgeable highly skilled trainers, while in the centres, the apprentices are supported by visits from a field based group of supportive assessors. All our staff are committed to making every apprentice a true success story.
The scheme has been a great success and the results speak for themselves. Completion rates have risen consistently over the recent years with most completing the course at the first attempt. The apprentice pass rate reached an all-time high in 2015 with an 82.5% rate of success (Qualification Success Rate Measure – Ofsted & SFA). All apprentices are achieving twice as many vocational credits as required by the national apprenticeship framework, with many making exceptional progress despite a lack of previous academic or practical experience.
Indeed our apprenticeship programme is key to our long-term strategy and we have already seen many examples of apprentices progressing through to senior roles including Centre Managers, Area Managers and Master Technicians. Essentially the scheme is helping to create future generations of Kwik Fit technicians and managers.
