Roadside recovery providers The AA has revealed that it receives around 17,000 calls about dashboard warning lights every month.

Dashboard warning lights serve a very important purpose and, if ignored, you could find yourself with a very expensive repair bill or even permanent damage to your engine. But new research carried out by the AA, which has around 4 million personal members in the UK, has found that many drivers don’t know what their dashboard warning lights are trying to tell them with some continuing to drive even when a red warning light came on.

The research also found that 13% of drivers did not keep the vehicle handbook in the car, either because they kept it in the house or because they were not given this when they purchased the vehicle. While many dashboard warning lights are standardised, some are specific to each vehicle manufacturer so the best way to diagnose problems when a warning light illuminates is to check your owner’s manual so make sure you keep it in the vehicle.

Not surprisingly, the number of calls the AA received about warning lights increased in the weeks following the launch of new registration plates in March and September each year when used car sales also see a boost. So if you’re buying a new second-hand car, make sure the vehicle handbook is included. If not, a downloadable version may be available from the vehicle manufacturer’s website.

If a red warning symbol alights while you are driving you should stop the vehicle as soon as possible and seek assistance.
