Continental Tyres

Kwik Fit stocks a wide range of cheap Continental tyres at our centres across the UK.

Continental is the premium tyre brand you can trust. Continental has been driving tyre technology for over 140 years, boasting German engineering that delivers superb braking, handling, performance and safety through technical excellence, innovation and design.

Tyres are the vital contact between your car and the road, and while they may all look the same, there is much more to buying a tyre than simply selecting the right size.

Continental’s commitment to safety ensures that every Continental tyre is manufactured using the best quality raw materials and construction techniques, for excellent road handling in all driving conditions. Driven to perform, Continental tyres deliver braking excellence all year round.

That’s why Continental is the number one tyre choice for the world’s top car manufacturers, with one in three new cars made in Europe now fitted with Continental tyres.

In independent tyre trials, Continental consistently takes the top spots and is a ‘Best Buy’ in leading consumer tests as well as being announced as Tyre Manufacturer of the Year 2014 by Tire Technology International.

Continuing with their rich history in road safety, Continental has recently launched a new safety initiative; Vision Zero. The Vision Zero campaign has a focus around using new tyre and automotive technology in order to reduce the number of road fatalities, injuries, and eventually accidents, down to zero.

Which Continental tyres are the best?

The Continental AllSeasonContact tyre has been rated as one of Continental’s best performing tyres. One of Germany’s leading automobile magazines stated the tyre’s snow traction is better than some dedicated winter tyres. The tyres are also rated highly for wet grip and fuel efficiency, and come in a variety of different sizes. The reinforced, or XL, sized tyres are stronger and more durable than the regular sizes, perfect for larger vehicles carrying heavy loads.

Another high performing tyre is Continental VanContact 4Season tyre - receiving various recommendations and awards from numerous automobile magazines. These tyres are specifically for vans and transporters. They are all-season tyres, perfect for all types of weather, and have an A rating for wet grip. The tyres have a high number of sipes which interlock on wet roads to improve wet braking performance.

How long do Continental tyres last?

Continental tyres are built for durability and safety in mind. However, the life span of your tyres also depends on your handling of the vehicle and style of driving, as well as road conditions and how frequently you use your car.

A good rule of thumb is to replace your tyres every 10 years or 20,000 miles, or when the tread depth falls below 1.6 which is the legal limit.

Benefits of Continental tyres

Every range of Continental tyres will have different benefits depending on its specification, but the most common benefits you can expect to see for each tyre type are:

All-season tyres

  • Reduced risk of aquaplaning in wet weather
  • Flexible all-season tread designs allowing greater braking performance on both wet and dry road
  • Adaptive all-season compound providing impressive grip on snowy and wet winter roads
  • Highly rated for fuel efficiency.

Winter tyres

  • Tread pattern enhances snow traction in wintery conditions
  • Unique tyre compound providing improved braking performance
  • Exceptional low rolling resistance for reduced fuel consumption.

Summer tyres

  • Optimised grip and handling experience - the best compromise between dry and wet performance
  • Optimised wet weather performance and aquaplaning protection
  • Fuel efficient
  • Increased safety in handling situations such as lane changes.

What is the Vision Zero campaign?

Continuing with their rich history in road safety, Continental has recently launched a new safety initiative; Vision Zero. The Vision Zero campaign has a focus around using new tyre and automotive technology in order to reduce the number of road fatalities, injuries, and eventually accidents, down to zero.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

ESC is an anti-skid technology that corrects a skid by reducing engine torque and braking individual wheels to bring the vehicle back on course, reducing the potential risk of accidents and crashes. This technology works well on dry, wet and slippery road conditions.

Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)

AEB can help drivers avoid or mitigate collisions with other vehicles or pedestrians by using forward looking radar, lidar and camera systems or a combination of these sensors. According to a report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the US, AEB can reduce injury claims by up to 35 percent.

Anti-lock brakes

For motorcyclists, anti-lock brakes can offer safety when riding motorcycles. They are available for all types of motorcycles, including scooters and mopeds. According to a report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the US, the rate of fatal crashes is 31 percent lower for motorcycles equipped with anti-lock brakes.

Tyre Safety

Tyres are a critical part of a vehicle, so it’s important to regularly check their tread depth and pressure. The legal limit for tread depth is 1.6mm, so any tyre falling beneath that measurement needs to be replaced. Continental recommends a tread depth of 3mm for summer tyres and 4mm for winter tyres.

According to a number of studies from tyre manufacturers, more than 50 percent of all cars are driven with underinflated tyres. All car tyres should have a pressure reading of between 31 and 35 when cold.
