How to Tell if Your Windscreen Wipers Need Replacing

An 8-step guide to checking whether your windscreen wipers need replacing.

  1. Check for streaks or smears left behind after using your windscreen wipers.
  2. If your wipers skip or judder across the windscreen, the rubber may have hardened, or the blade may have warped.
  3. Listen for squeaking, squealing, or chattering, which can indicate worn or dry rubber.
  4. Inspect the rubber edge for cracks, splits, or fraying, as damaged blades should be replaced rather than repaired.
  5. Look for missed patches of water on the windscreen.
  6. If your wipers make excessive scraping noises or vibrate while in use, replace them before they damage the windscreen.
  7. Check the rubber for signs of brittleness, dryness, or missing chunks that could reduce wiping performance.
  8. Replace your windscreen wipers around every 12 months, even if they appear to be in good condition.

Your windscreen wipers are essential for keeping your view clear in rain, snow, and road spray. Over time, sunlight, dirt, and changing temperatures cause the rubber to wear down, often before you realise it's happening. Although windscreen wipers should generally be replaced around every 12 months, frequent use and harsh weather can shorten their lifespan.

If your wipers aren't performing as they should, it's important to know whether they simply need cleaning or replacing. You can learn more about general upkeep in our windscreen wiper maintenance guide, but if you're unsure whether it's time for new blades, start with the checklist below.

What are the signs that your windscreen wipers need replacing?

If your windscreen wipers show any of the following signs, it's time to consider replacing them.

1. Streaking on the glass

If your wipers leave streaks or smears across the windscreen, the rubber edge is no longer making full contact with the glass. Streaks can distort your view, especially in low light or heavy rain. If cleaning your windscreen doesn’t help, it’s time to replace your wiper blades. Streaking is often one of the first signs your windscreen wipers need replacing.

2. Skipping or juddering

When blades jump or judder across the windscreen instead of gliding smoothly, it’s a sign that the rubber has hardened or the blade has warped. This uneven motion prevents effective clearing and can cause distracting vibrations. If your wipers continue to skip after cleaning the windscreen, replace them as soon as possible. Once the rubber has hardened or the blade has warped, cleaning won't restore its performance.

3. Squeaking or chattering

If you hear a loud squeak, squeal or chatter from your wipers as they move across the windscreen, it’s usually a sign of worn or dry rubber. If cleaning the windscreen and wiper blades doesn’t solve the problem, replacement is usually the only fix.

4. Splitting or cracking

Inspect the edges of each blade closely. If you spot cracks, splits or frayed rubber, the blade won’t maintain even pressure against the windscreen, so it’s time to replace your wiper blades. Damaged rubber can't be repaired, so replacement is the only solution.

5. Missed or uneven areas

When parts of your windscreen remain wet after each pass, your blades are no longer making proper contact with the windscreen. If you notice this, replace your wiper blades straight away. Cleaning alone won't restore even contact, and the problem will usually get worse over time.

6. Excessive noise or vibration

If you hear scraping or notice excessive vibration while the wipers are running, it’s a sign the blade or arm may be misaligned. This can also mean the rubber edge has hardened and is no longer flexible. In this case, replace the wiper blades as soon as possible. Persistent noise or vibration means your wiper blades are no longer operating smoothly and could damage the windscreen if left unchecked.

7. Brittle or damaged rubber

Check the texture of the blade’s rubber. If it feels rough, dry or has small chunks missing, it won’t clear water properly. Once the rubber begins to perish, it's time to replace the wiper blades.

8. Your wipers are over 12 months old

Even if your blades look fine, they should generally be replaced every 12 months. If you've noticed any of these signs, don't wait until the 12-month mark to fit new wiper blades.

Illustrated guide to checking your wipers

Use the illustrations below to help check for some of the most common signs of worn windscreen wipers.

1. Check for streaking: If your wipers leave streaks or smears behind, the rubber may no longer be making full contact with the windscreen.

2. Look for missed patches: If areas of the windscreen remain wet after each pass, your wiper blades may need replacing.

3. Listen for squeaking: If your wipers squeak or chatter as they move across the windscreen, worn rubber could be the cause.

4. Inspect for splitting: Check the rubber edge for cracks, splits or fraying. If you spot any damage, it's time to replace your wiper blades.

5. Replace your wipers every 12 months: Even if they look fine, replacing your wiper blades around every 12 months helps maintain clear visibility in all weather conditions.

6. Examine the rubber: Check for dry, brittle or damaged rubber. If you spot any signs of wear, it's time to replace your wiper blades.
