BTCC 2026: Milestones, Mayhem and Mixed Conditions at Brands Hatch
Jessica Bird | Monday 11th May 2026 10:03am

If Donington was a taste of what was to come for 2026, Brands Hatch Indy showed just how good a classic British Touring Car Championship weekend can be.
It had everything with mixed conditions all day, milestones and shock wins with the series signature wheel-to-wheel action across the entire pack. There was no shortage of excitement as the BTCC arrived at one of the calendar’s most iconic circuits for another unforgettable weekend of touring car chaos.
Brands Hatch Indy always has a way of creating drama, but this year’s visit felt particularly unpredictable. The weather shifted constantly throughout Sunday, grip levels changed lap-by-lap and strategy became almost impossible to perfect.
And somehow, that only made the racing even better.
Qualifying race: Sutton Strikes Early
Ash Sutton produced a stunning drive in the Brands Hatch qualifying race, charging from fifth on the grid to claim a dramatic victory.
The race burst into life on the opening lap as Daryl DeLeon got a quick start and was alongside Tom Ingram into turn one. This battle conditioned around the lap until they collided at Graham Hill when DeLeon locked up, sending Ingram across the grass and allowing Sutton to seize the lead.
With Ingram not able to make progress from fifth, he had it all to do on Sunday to stay in contention while DeLeon’s teammate Charles Rainford battled Dan Rowbottom for 18th after picking up damage earlier in the race. A close battle with both drivers getting roughed up but the BMW won the position.
It didn’t take long for Sutton to have a gap for the lead and although DeLeon kept the pressure on throughout, Sutton pulled clear to secure another impressive BTCC win.
Race 1: Sutton’s Golden Victory
Rain just before the start turned the Indy circuit into chaos, but Sutton made a perfect launch while rivals struggled for grip behind him. The race quickly became a frantic battle, with crashes, overtakes and a safety car caused by Adam Morgan into the barriers at Paddock Hill Bend keeping the field tightly packed throughout.
Ricky Collard closed after the safety car and briefly snatched the lead after an intense fight at the front, but Sutton hit back immediately with a superb move to retake control and pull clear in the closing laps. Behind them, Tom Ingram and Dan Cammish traded places in a fierce scrap for the podium as the slippery conditions caught drivers out all over the circuit.
In the end, Sutton kept his cool to secure a landmark 50th BTCC win, and another statement victory in this year’s title fight.
Race 2: Taylor-Smith’s Rain Masterclass
The rain stopped between race one and two but started again as the cars headed to the grid. All cars were on the slick tyres with some coming in for wets after the formation lap but this strategy was not enough to claw back the gap to the slick running tyres. If you ever needed confirmation of how talented these drivers are, race two showed their ability to race under very mixed conditions.
Sutton and Collard started well at the front with plenty struggling to get a good launch. Lewis Selby wasn’t able to make it round lap one and got stuck in the gravel bringing out the safety car.
Nearly half way through the race the BMW of Rainford had gained places and was past Cammish for fourth place while Collard took the lead from Sutton and Ingram was on their tail hoping to get through the NAPA driver as the rain started to come down heavier.
It didn’t take long for cars to start struggling in these conditions. Rowbottom then Chris Smiley in the grass but chaos began. The Toyota’s were acting as one car making their way through the pack and past a damaged Rainford who had a collision with Cammish and went backwards from fourth as a result.
Árón Taylor-Smith was quietly getting on with the job as those in front started to fall off the track. An incident between Ingram and Sutton at clearways closed the gap even more allowing him to get up the inside of Ingram at turn one. This unleashed him to take on Sutton and Collard, getting past both and succeeding.
The race was eventually red-flagged due to the worsening conditions and an incident at druids, sealing an emotional and hugely popular victory for Taylor-Smith, his first BTCC win in 10 years.
Race 3: Ingram hits back
Ingram rounded off the Brands Hatch weekend in style with a commanding victory in a dramatic Race 3, finally securing his first win of the 2026 BTCC season.
Sutton made a lightning start from seventh and swept around the outside at Paddock Hill Bend to immediately challenge the front runners. But it was Ingram who quickly emerged as the man to beat, slicing through the pack before pulling off a brilliant move on James Dorlin to take the lead.
Once out front, the reigning champion was unstoppable. After muscling his way into the lead with a decisive move at Druids, Ingram immediately began to edge clear while chaos unfolded behind him. Ash Sutton was locked in a relentless battle with Mikey Doble, the pair running side-by-side through Paddock Hill Bend and trading positions under braking as the fight for second intensified. Doble defended brilliantly against the charging NAPA Ford, but Sutton’s relentless pressure eventually paid off with a clinical move to reclaim the position in the closing stages.
Behind them, the chasing pack remained tightly bunched throughout, with barely a second covering several cars as drivers fought for every inch around the narrow Indy circuit. DeLeon joined the battle mid-way through the race but couldn’t make it past the Audi of Doble.
In the end, Ingram crossed the line nearly four seconds clear to seal a hugely important win and reignite his title challenge.
Weekend complete: Classic Brands Hatch Chaos
Brands Hatch Indy once again delivered everything that makes the BTCC one of the most unpredictable championships in motorsport. Changing weather, aggressive racing and huge championship moments combined to create one of the standout weekends of the 2026 season so far.
Sutton left Kent with momentum after securing his 50th BTCC victory and remaining firmly at the centre of the title fight, while Tom Ingram’s dominant Race 3 win ensured the reigning champion stays within touching distance heading into the next round. But the weekend also belonged to Árón Taylor-Smith, whose emotional return to the top step after a decade away from victory became one of the defining stories of the season.
