EV battery

As more electric vehicles (EVs) hit the road, confidence in their batteries has never been more important. No matter the age of your vehicle, understanding battery health is key to keeping your EV running smoothly.

At Kwik Fit, we are constantly looking for ways to give you peace of mind in your EV. To help us do that we’re partnering with AVILOO, and will be introducing EV Battery Testing within selected centres in May 2026.

The rise of electric vehicles

The UK’s EV market is charging forwards, and there are now over 1.5 million electric vehicles on UK roads. Not only this, but the used EV market is expected to triple by 2027. That means more choice for drivers, but also more questions about what’s happening under the bonnet (or, more accurately, beneath the floor).

Utilising the UK Government EV Car Grant, and buying a used EV rather than new, can reduce the initial cost - but battery health is often the number one concern. That’s where independent testing and certification can make all the difference.

Build confidence through certification

A trusted, independent battery certificate provides a clear picture of a battery’s condition, helping you understand how your EV is performing today - and how well it’s likely to perform in the future.

With AVILOO Battery Certification, drivers can rely on data that’s accurate, verified and easy to interpret. Simply put, battery certification helps to build lasting confidence in electric vehicle ownership.

Introducing the AVILOO Flash Test

At Kwik Fit, we’re helping drivers make informed choices with the AVILOO Flash Test, a quick, plug-and-play battery health check that delivers results.

  • Plug & Play: No charging or driving required
  • Accurate: TÜV- and CARA-certified with ±3% precision
  • Compatible: Works with 95% of EVs and plug-in hybrids

It’s a fast and reliable way to check the health of your battery, helping to give you complete peace of mind every time you get behind the wheel.

What we know about EV batteries

Independent testing and real-world data paint a reassuring picture of how well modern EV batteries last.

An Arval study of over 8,300 tested EVs found the average battery State of Health (SoH) to be 93%, even at higher mileages. In fact, EVs with over 200,000 km (124,000 miles) still maintained around 90% battery health.

That means most EV batteries are built for the long haul, but good charging habits and regular checks can help keep them performing their best.

FAQs: Looking after your EV battery

What does "State of Health" (SoH) mean?

SoH measures how your battery’s performance compares to when it was new. For example, an SoH of 90% means it can deliver 90% of its original energy capacity.

How long do EV batteries last?

Most EV batteries are designed to last 8-15 years, and many retain over 90% health after 100,000 miles. Independent testing, like the AVILOO Flash Test, helps confirm that your battery is performing as it should.

Can a weak battery be repaired?

In some cases, yes. Individual cells can sometimes be replaced rather than the entire pack, but identifying early changes in performance through a health test is the best way to manage your EV effectively.

How can I look after my EV battery?

  • Avoid charging to 100% or letting it drop to 0% too often, aim to stay between 20–80%.
  • Limit frequent rapid charging where possible.
  • Precondition your battery before charging in cold weather.
  • Parking in moderate temperatures, garages or shaded areas can help.

Why should I test my battery if my EV seems fine?

Like a health check-up, a battery test gives you reassurance that everything’s working as it should. It helps you track performance over time, and ensures your EV continues to deliver the range and reliability you expect.
